2009 Semester Program in Sorrento Sorrento Lingue and Alfred State College are pleased to announce our study abroad Italian Semester program for spring of 2010 in Sorrento. This is expected to be a seamless program that will allow students to spend their spring semester taking the following courses: Studio Sorrento (6 credits) Archaeology - Cities of fire (3 credits) [by Sorrento Lingue staff] Foundation & Concrete Construction (3 credits) [online] Architectural Photography (3 credits)
Electives (chooses one) [by Sorrento Lingue staff] - Italian 1 (3 credits)
- Western Civilization since 1500: a comparative prospective (3 credits)
- In the heart of the Art: from Greek Art to Italian Baroque (3 credits)
Total credits: 18 These courses are taught by Alfred State College faculty unless otherwise noted. Students will also be able to customize their curriculum of study by taking online courses through Alfred State or any other institution. Campania region surrounding Sorrento possess an immensely important architectural heritage that extends back to the age of Homer. Within easy reach there are the Greek cities of Paestum and Cuma; the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Puteoli; the Roman villas of Oplonti and Castellamare; the Renaissance and Baroque architecture of Naples; and the traditional Mediterranean townscapes of Ravello, Amalfi, Capri, Ischia and Sorrento itself. 
When we arrived we were simply strangers in a new culture. Now, four months later, we feel a part of the culture, part of everyday life of Sorrento 2009 Semester Program in Sorrento The innumerable cultural assets of the area promise an incomparable learning experience for the serious students of architecture. Field trips to Rome and Cairo as well as a 10 day spring break tour of Athens and the Greek islands are also planned. Faculty and Alfred College students will travel together in January to Sorrento and, at the end of the term, students will be free to travel independently before returning to the US. Classes in Sorrento will start in January and end in May. We are now accepting students from schools of architecture, as well as any students wishing to fulfill liberal arts and humanities requirements while studying and living in a truly unique learning environment. Sorrento Lingue and Alfred State College offer the American college students what is pheraps the only permanent semester of studies in the South of Italy. Sorrento program will establish a foundation for lifelong learning, foster an understanding of global culture and better equip the participants to "hit the ground running" after graduation. The beautiful scenery of the Gulf of Naples and the safe and welcoming city of Sorrento provide the setting for an unforgettable educational experience. Transferring credits through the Alfred State College is possible for other Universities.
