Sorrento - Myth and Life

Sorrento Myth

Sorrento stands on a dramatic line of 150-foot cliffs, looking north across the Bay of Naples. It was originally a Greek village whose name was derived from the mythical song of the mermaids. Named “Syrenusion” or “Syreon” meaning Siren’s land.

In The Odyssey, by Homer, it was from Sorrento that Ulysses heard the tempting song of the Sirens, the nymphs who laboured long hours to seduce and shipwreck passing sailors.

Sorrento Life

The town itself is well preserved in architecture, tradition, and apperance. Narrow cobble stone streets, adorned churches, and charming houses bring Sorrento to life. The center of Sorrento is Piazza Tasso, overlooking a steep gorge and glimpses of the Bay of Naples. It is easy to spend hours watching the throngs of people and enjoying the local delicacies and delights.
