Introduction to the European Union (45 h, 3 credits)
This course is aimed at students who have little or no previous knowledge about the history and development of European integration. The central objective is to provide an introduction to the institutions, theories and public policies of the European Union, also paying attention to contemporary debates.
- the history of the establishment of the EU, including political debates which have shaped its construction since the 1950s
- the EU organizations - the European Commission, the Council of Ministers, the European Parliament and the European Court of Justice - and their respective role in its government.
- the political theory of integration: the reasons of the establishment of the EU; the main controversies concerning the institutionalization of the EU; the EU power versus the national states
- a general examination of the content and issues of the main EU public policies - agriculture, fisheries, competition, environment, foreign policy and social policies
